Amplify
Designed features to improve online learning activities for K–5 students and enhance teacher-facing dashboards.
INTRODUCTION
What did I do during my internship?
In the summer of 2024, I interned at Amplify, a K–12 education technology company that develops curriculum, assessments, and digital tools for classrooms. I worked with the Learning Experience Design team to streamline online math activities for K-5 students and improve teacher-facing dashboards.
As the sole intern on the team, I collaborated closely with engineering, product, user research, and marketing, gaining hands-on experience across the full product development process. This experience not only refined my design and presentation skills but also allowed me to contribute to projects that directly supported Amplify’s mission to positively impact students and educators worldwide.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
How can I streamline K–5 student math activities and teacher dashboards for better online learning?
User feedback revealed that students needed a faster way to type math symbols, while teachers needed dashboards that were easier to read and navigate. While the specifics of my work are under NDA, my main contributions included:
-
Designing a new keypad interaction that streamlined the student experience in math activities
-
Partnering with the user research team to create testing plans that measured student engagement with the keypad design
-
Redesigning the teacher dashboard to reduce visual clutter and improve usability
-
Preparing documentation for smooth developer handoff
At the end of my internship, I had the opportunity to present my work to Larry Berger, the CEO of Amplify, along with senior design managers across the company. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and I am so grateful that I got to work alongside such knowledgeable leaders in the education technology industry.
TAKEAWAYS
What I Learned
Clear communication is essential in cross-functional teams.
As the sole intern on the team, I learned quickly that alignment and transparency were key. Through consistent check-ins, open documentation on Notion, and actively seeking feedback from my team and managers, I stayed connected with my teammates despite the remote setting of the internship. Regular updates also allowed me to move projects forward efficiently while building trust with my managers.
Balancing design vision with technical feasibility is critical.
While designing the new keypad interaction, I realized that one of my initial ideas was not practical due to engineering constraints. By setting up meetings and collaborating directly with engineers, I was able to come up with a new solution that balanced usability and feasibility. This experience emphasized the importance of involving developers early in the design process to account for technical limitations from the start.
